Flamingos

One of the most advanced bird conservation projects in Yucatan State is the Caribbean Flamingo’s (Phoenicopterus ruber) by Niños y Crías A.C. www.ninosycrias.org.mx

This organization has established 3 program objectives:

  1. Protect nesting sites.
  2. Ensure feeding grounds in good environmental conditions.
  3. Guarantee freshwater flow at critical areas.
  4. To learn the species’ population dynamics*.

The following results were obtained:  1) The flamingo population has doubled between 1999 - 2005.  2) Disturbance to feeding flocks by tourist boats has been diminished.  3)  Two drinking / bathing springs have been cleansed.
